Broadnose Sevengill Shark Project

Shadows in the Kelp Forests, these intelligent and huge creatures are rarely seen by divers and the encounters are cherished for a lifetime

The Broadnose Sevengill Shark Notorynchus Cepedianus is one of the Apex Predators in Kelp Forests worldwide. An animal that has remained mostly unchanged for nearly 200 million years, this is one of the smartest species of sharks. They have dynamic life cycles, complex social groups, and are one of the least known large sharks that visit the populous beaches of Southern California.

Our goal is to dive—both freediving and SCUBA—with these animals to document and uncover their mysteries. By recording diver sightings and exploring new locations, we aim to deepen our understanding of these sharks and contribute to their protection.

“Seeing this shadow, emerge from the kelp forest, brings both a feeling of awe as well as a realization of the lack of understanding of this animal.”

Join me in finding these incredible animals. At the moment I am looking for dedicated interns who are passionate about studying this animals behavior and seeing them in the wild. My goal is to contribute to databanks accessible to scientists in hopes to protect these animals through proper management and utilize our data to write our own research paper about our local sharks.
